  • JB4 back end flash maps for 3.3L via EK1Lite update

    Hey guys,

Been playing around with the flashing system for a couple weeks now and overall it's pretty impressive! It lets you load flash maps (and updates!) at home without having to ship and mail around your ECU.

We've got a pretty solid JB4 back end flash map developed for E30+ cars. Changes include revised air/fuel targets and scalar mapping for more consistent fueling, rescaling some annoyance limp mode limiters like turbine speed or boost too high, revised calculated torque for improved shifting, and of course bumping up ignition advance for more power. With the BEF loaded you continue to use the JB4 maps as normal for determining how aggressive you want to run, boost by gear changes, etc.

We're also working on a BEF for use with straight E85 which has proven more challenging than expected. Fortunately sxth has been really helpful in adding tables as we ask for them to keep it moving forward. For example we had to make cranking fuel changes so the car would start properly on cold mornings, spark dwell changes to prevent spark blowout at higher RPM, etc, etc. There are still a few things to work out but progress is being made! Note to run more than around E40 requires the Fuel-IT high pressure pump, CPI, or WMI.

One of the differences between the way we do flash maps and what some other tuners do is that we're fully transparent about what table changes are made. We're not trying to keep any of the flash changes secret. For example attached are the current cranking and dwell changes we're testing on straight E85.

The next step is to expand customer testing. The process is:

    1) Purchase EK1Lite from sxth and use it to read the bin from your ECU
    2) Follow the process with Sxth to "patch" your bin
    3) Email your patched factory bin to [email protected] along with a list of mods and fuel being used
    4) We will work with sxth to ensure we have the correct definition file for your bin (e.g. may be a delay at this step if we don't)
    5) We tune the bin and email it back in ekp format along with a factory ekp for the car for when you want to flash back to stock.
    6) You flash the tuned ekp to your car with the EK1Lite device

It's a little more complex than say BMW flash map distribution as there is some labor involved and I imagine some waiting involved as sxth builds up their bin definition files. Due to the labor we'll have a small labor charge. We're going with $75 to start and then we'll evaluate it from there depending on how much time it actually ends up taking on our end. paypal to [email protected] when you send in your patched BIN.

I have not played around with any of the "exhaust burble" maps yet personally but those will also be an option, as well as raising the speed limiter for those who have upgraded their tires, etc. As is our company wide policy we will not disable any emissions equipment for you so don't even ask.

I'll update everyone when we've made a little more progress!

This sounds fantastic. Is there going to be a limit to the amount of higher maps that can be used after the EK1Lite flashes the update? I guess I am just trying to understand. For example only, if the ecu tune flash increases boost +6 (and other parameters) and then I change to map3 will that also try to increase +6 boost-for a total of +6 boost?
Or is there going to be a whole different set of MAPS specifically dialed in for people using the EKILite flash?

The specific details are to be determined but the goal is for the BEF to be setup so once loaded, all JB4 maps are selected as normal. As needed we'll have optimized those maps within the JB4 with a special setting to let it know you're running our BEF.

Ready for a couple more testers. If you've already got your EKP and have patched your ECU with it, email me your original BIN and along with the fuel and mods and I'll see what we can do. [email protected]

So, it will require separate maps and reflashing for "91 to E30" and "full E85"? How long does reflashing take?

Yes currently different maps for E30 and below, and straight E85. Flashing takes a minute or two.

For anyone following, I had the opportunity to test Terry's BEF. I'm currently running E50 on the money, and all I can say is I'm impressed. He was able to advance overall ignition timing, fix all the inherent issues with running High E associated with this platform, and it's working seamless with the CPI. Just for kicks I did a Dragy run with a completely full tank of gas. I did NOT do a boosted launch, just a gas pedal smash and the car ran an 11.5. This was done with only 19psi max boost also. My calculations with a boosted launch, weight reduction and a prepped track this car would run 10's again without a doubt. (Which you will see soon

                Hey Terry,

Thanks for all the great information. What would you recommend for someone who is currently running the Lap3 ECU/TCU tune? I do have a JB4 that is not currently installed, Methanol kit from lap3, AFE intakes, IMR Intercooler and piping. I live close by Evans from IMR and get most of my work done with him. I am not a huge fan of Lap3 and their customer service. Would you recommend getting the EK1? I live near a lot of e85 so would love to have a full e85 tune eventually ( i know this would require upgrading my fuel pump to the one you currently sale). Is it difficult to switch from a full e85 tune to a 91 tune?

Thanks again for all your time and hard work on our platform.
