  • JB4 for Cadillac CT4, CT4-V, CT5, CT5-V, & CT4 Blackwing

    Hey guys,

Working on JB4 development for the various turbocharged Cadillac models including the CT4, CT4-V, CT5, and CT5-V.

To that end was able to get a CT5-V in the office over the weekend for some initial dyno testing and tuning. Best run factory was 300whp and 392wtq. The power seemed a bit low as I've heard they claim 360 crank hp factory, but I haven't seen many other dynos on them so not really sure there.

With the JB4 we were able to crank power up to 354whp and 445wtq, adding around 5psi. We had a little programming snafu adding boost around 4000rpm which we'll address before release but other than that everything seems to be in order. Overall a solid little platform! As development continues we'll get some of the other models in for further dyno testing and tuning.

Thanks to a local customer dropping off a 2021 CT5V for a few days we were able to get integrated MAF control working and smooth out that midrange power dip we had before! These runs were done on E20, equivalent of 93 octane.

I'll be ordering a 2022 CT5-V in the same color. I saw the dynojet results on your YouTube page. Impressive. Payam suggested that I pose questions here: The discontinued CT6 with the same 3.0TT was rated at 404 hp @ 5700 and 400 lb-ft @ 2500-5100. Any explanation for the drop in hp from 400 (CT6) to 360 in the CT5-V?

It seems that the data from your Dynojet shows stock torque (at the wheels) to be much higher than expected. Boost, fueling or exhaust configuration? What is the stock boost on the 2021 CT5-V? I also noted that your modified JB4 version lacked any gains between 3700- 4200rpm. Why?
Looking forward to seeing your completed JB4 for the CT5-V.

Figured I'd use this placeholder for our new Blackwing support!

Was able to get a local Blackwing on the dyno last night for a little JB4 tuning. The car is 100% factory with 10k miles, running 91 octane + 2 gallons of E85 to simulate 93 octane.

We made some refinements to the JB4 v3 maps including:

      1) Revised targets for maps 1, 2, and 3
      2) A new suggested fuel bias which I've attached below
      3) Adjusted the logging channels to include fuel pressure high, and to (hopefully) change IAT to charge air temperature from MAF temperature.
      4) Started testing our optional add on BCM module which connects the JB4 directly to the easy to reach wastegate solenoids. This allows the JB4 to directly adjust WGDC for slightly higher boost targets. The add on module will be $200, development on the mapping is still ongoing. We're sending one out to Tapout shortly so they can start playing with it as well.
      5) We found at higher boost levels high fuel pressure starts to dip. Likely this platform is going to benefit from WMI or CPI down the road. The JB4 is setup to safely control both.

Hi, I've been looking into getting the JB4 for my CT 5-V AWD. I've spoken with another person that has your JB4 for their CT5V, they mentioned some issues under daily driving and WOT shifting.

Just looking to see if you have any updates on your work with the CT5s, and also if you ended getting the dip of performance around 4K RPM resolved.

I know you have it on the website under the Beta version, just looking for an update before pulling the trigger.

              Terry:
Thanks for all the development work you have done on the JB4 for the CT5 V and CT4 V. Any chance that BMS will get a CT4 V on the dyno in the near future for pre and post JB4 runs.

New MAF unit came in last night from BMS. Tested remote start, and out of about 8 start ups, only 1 failed with a P010C code. Thanks to Terry for getting this out, it's cold up here, few days reaching -33C.

Have had some greasy weather, should dry up this weekend and get some logs out to Terry.

Had some hiccups but the logs were looking good. That boost dip is alot smoother (in the 3-4k rpm) and holds boost higher. Still having issues where the remote starter works and sometimes throws a code + doesn't work. Moving in the right direction at least. Did try a bit of testing for terry so he can narrow down the issue some.

Car feels good to drive, was able to get some pulls, launches and what not. Gauge cluster read 4.4 0-60, and 12.5 in the 1/4mile, on winter ties and a unprepped surface.

Update 1/25/22: narrowed down the scenarios that remote start has issues - very cold weather & cold car. Usually if it's the first start of the day remote start is hit and miss in the -10C to -15C range, recently in the -30C temps it does not work in the morning. If you got the car up to temp though the remote start usually works up until around the 5hr-7hr mark of sitting and cooling off (surprised me how long the oil and trans holds temp). When you get past the 5hr mark it's a bit hit and miss (definitely not happening after 7hours) for my temps up here in Ontario.
Logs showing car is holding boost like a champ with the updated chip, holds it well through the Rev range until tapering off in the 5k+ based on map targets.
Terry has let me know he has a JB4 with MAF integrated harness ready to test out before sending them out, which should allow him to get the MAF dialed in better (I'm hoping with this he can get some more performance and dial in the cold starts with the remote start).

Super grateful to Terry, was expecting progress with the JB4 to be much slower but I feel like he's moving it along real good. Hoping the car's platform will let the JB4 reach the point of the other platforms and pull out the car's potential.

If anyone with a CT4/5 is willing and local to BMS give terry a shout!

                    CT5-V
Got a couple K&N panel filters to replace the stock ones in.
Last time out doing logs hit 4.5sec 0-60 on 3 runs consecutively(only did the 3), -13C out, winter tires, unprepped surface not fully dry. Car feels so good, can't stop ripping it!

Little update, found out from logging vehicle, stock ecu reduces boost in cold temps, I find around -5C to -10C is when boost is reduced. Max boost on map 0 (JB4 pass through mode) was around 11psi.

Today though, was +3C and boy was it fantastic to see what the car has with the JB4 and warmer than frigid weather. Car on dry pavement was breaking the tires loose and traction control was kicking in. With traction control off, able to spin the tires and put the rear of the car sideways from a standstill rolling into WOT. Car feels like a absolute monster compared to -15C yesterday. Can't wait to get the winter tires off and the PS4S on. With launch control the car actually picks up much better than WOT from a standstill, it's still spinning some but I think the stock PS4S will eliminate that and just let the car fly out of the hole. Getting 4.4s 0-60mph on winters, and dry salty roads.

Just need someone to get a car in to Terry so MAF integration can get tested and get them sent out! hopefully it will get rid of the remote start issues. He mentioned potentially looking into EWG wires/fuel wires like the other platforms after MAF integration is set up and working well (hopefully they will work with the global B system, stingers are getting close to +100whp and tq from just a JB4 and a intake on 91!!!)

                        Hey Terry,

I have a 2021 CT5-V RWD just wondering if you needed another test car for any reason.

I just purchased JB4 System so Im exited to try that out.

Not sure how to upload a log file from the jb4 app. Not the best pic, lol even with the draggy screenshot had to crop and what not to meet the forums restrictions.

I do not have a stock run just because I got the draggy this past week along with the new MAF harness and JB4 board, and haven't bothered unhooking it all for a dragy run. Online though, car and driver and a few other sites/reviews claim a 13.3 1/4 mile time @ 106.xx nothing about road conditions but I'd guess a unprepped road surface. I was expecting a little more mph over the 106.xx they claim. I'm no expert in setting up the car or jb4 to get the best performance, but For panel filters and JB4 half second on winters seems pretty decent though. Car definitely isn't and Audi or BMW, with "comparable manufacturer's hp/tq figures" under rated or not, they just make quick cars. I'm excited to get my Michelin x-snows off(on 19" stock wheels) and PS4S on, along with wheels that are a little lighter and see what I can get on a draggy run!

I'm hoping to have the jb4 dialed in to where I'm happy to take it to the drag strip this summer and see what it can do on a prepped surface.

I feel like I found the limit with our stock plugs and boost, overboosting on shifts to 18psi+ starting to get misfires. I feel like the car has more in it, but can't do much when you have tone it down to account for overboost spikes and misfires.

Here's my latest draggy, winter tires on a pretty flat road. I will be getting my summer tires on Monday, but they need a wee bit of a break in before I pound on them, will get a draggy done with those guys on. I found a performance shop that sells E85 on pump an hour away, I think I'm gonna grab a few jerry cans and attempt a low ethanol mix to see if I can squeeze some power out of the timing side of things(Canadian gas 94 octane currently), and hopefully not cause misfires with any extra fuel that the ecu dumps in!

                                                                More draggy results to come!

It's a small fortune to do plugs but that gives me a good judgement of what the car can take if I wasn't getting misfires. The GM specs actually list .035. I was curious so I just looked that up. Also, you weren’t kidding about replacing the plugs or taking them out to adjust the gap. I couldn’t find an official labor time but with all the stuff they show to be removed from the top I could see it taking a couple hours.

                                                                          Comment

ALLData shows 6.2hrs, and shops are quoting for 7. Along with some R1234yf drain + recharge. Where abouts are you getting the .035? In the owners manual it shows the 3.0L is .025-.030 for spark plug gap spec. I also bought the ACdelco OEM Iridiums from rock auto before I looked up the ALLData. They are "pre-gapped at .030".

Edit: oh ****, I looked at the ALLdata specs and they call for .035. information seems a bit inconsistent.

It’s not to say they couldn’t update it one way or the other, and I understand it’s often suggested to have smaller gaps with boost and sometimes a colder plug, but all of my previous cars were much easier to replace plugs.

Yeah I definitely bought plugs with the mindset of unplugging some connectors, maybe moving a couple hoses. If the cam shaft housing cover didn't exist there, it would be a breeze to do plugs, maybe a little tight. Literally taking all that crap off just to remove the cover so you can unbolt the coils and pull plugs. If I was gonna try to mod to the moon and not care about warranty I'd probably attempt just cutting out the section where the plugs and coils are with a oscillating tool lmfao.. I was thinking of an attempt to unbolt the wastegate bracket, moving the wire harness and a couple other brackets and see how snug that cover was on under the intercooler. I didn't see any bolts or anything under the intercooler and through the cam housing cover in the pictures. Are you a tech for GM? And do you have a ct5? Lol let us know if you ever do a plug change or figure out a less invasive procedure. Everything has a by the book way, and I'm hoping there's a struggle a bit more but not need to mess around with coolant systems way. It's hard enough to find shops that can deal with the new R1234YF stuff aside from dealerships where I am. Let alone the amount of labour hours it'd cost.

Then we'll have the higher maps for those who can accomidate or don't mind closing down the plug gap.

I’ll probably install it tomorrow and run map 0 until I get there and then next weekend I’ll record some data in the JB4 app and the dragy app.

I didn’t have any issues on that run. 2 min later I was at a light and rolled off the line before hitting it, still on map 1. It went through the gear like normal then was either at redline or misfiring like crazy and wouldn’t shift. I let out of it, the car shifted like normal and then I had service stabilitrak, service rear end and a flashing CEL. I assume I was misfiring like crazy with that stabilitrak light, but I didn’t record that one since I hadn’t planned on hitting it like that. I did send the log I saved but I didn’t have any issues with that run. I was hesitant to do much of anything else so I came home and parked it for the night.

Flashing CEL? Sounds like the misfires I get. Maybe turn on auto logging if it isn't already set, should be able to get it to start a log at like 70% throttle or 80% etc. As long as the jb4 is on and connected.

Hopefully terry can get some settings to sort you out. Let me know if you decide on looking into a spark plug change with your shop guys! Car would be a freaking beast if misfires weren't holding it back.

I won’t be paying for plug replacement or anything, though. I know BMS has the 30 day return policy. I’d explore that for a 20% hit vs $700 in labor for plugs that may or may not fix anything.

I'd give terry a shout and see if he can work with you on settings that avoid misfires. It's BS that plugs are such a big job on this car, 10 dollar part, and $1000 to put in.
